OUTDOOR LEARNING

Fall 2020 Courses

Aquatic Entomology is taught every other year for upper division biology, entomology, and water science students and graduate students. The course emphasizes on the biology (morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin, and distribution), life history, ecology, taxonomy, nomenclature and evolutionary relationships among the aquatic insect orders. The lab part of the course will emphasize collecting techniques, identification, and curation of aquatic insects.

Department of Entomology
Freshwater Biomonitoring emphasizes the concepts and practices of using freshwater macroinvertebrates to monitor the environmental health of freshwater ecosystems. Students will investigate the effects of different types of pollution and environmental stress on assemblages of organisms and underlying ecological principles: such as the role of biological studies in environmental regulation. Students will learn study design, field and laboratory methods, data analysis and interpretation, and develop presentation skills.

Restoration Ecology is taught every other year for upper division biology students and graduate students. The course focuses on placing underlying ecological theory into a restoration context. The course is team-taught with K.C. Larson, a terrestrial ecologist with an emphasis on invasive species.  In addition, UCA is working to restore a stream that runs through campus (see slide show).  This will be an on-going project!

General Ecology
for all biology majors. This class introduces population, community, and ecosystem ecology in the context of human population growth and associated impacts on global biogeochemical cycles, biodiversity and climate patterns. Much of the labs are spent outside collecting data at the Jewell Moore Nature Reserve.

Study of Inland Waters and their Conservation. This upper division course will allow students to compare and contrast the diversity of freshwater ecosystems and learn the tools needed for structural and functional assessments.

Principles of Biology II for majors.  Freshman students are introduced to the concepts of evolution, biological diversity, and ecology. All class materials are posted on UCA Blackboard.

Environmental Practicum, a capstone research course for Environmental Science students. Students are given an environmental problem to solve using ecological methods.  The course is research-based and students work in groups to propose, execute, and present their ecological research to stakeholders.
